This is the place where Victoria’s history changed so dramatically. In 1851 the first gold discovered in Victoria was found here and the great gold rush was on, with miners flocking in from right around the globe.
That gold history is still so clearly evident, as Clunes has possibly the best collection of well-preserved 19th century architecture. The main street is still wide enough to turn a horse and wagon.
